M10c Conversion, In Progress II

So I’ve been still working on this on and off.. first, is to sort the basic hull out. After a quiet Friday afternoon of snipping and gluing:

20131106-141616.jpgNothing really out of ordinary, since it’s per instruction. The only difference is that I decided to glue the sponson ammo bins to the lower hull instead of the upper hull. This is to facilitate painting, since gluing to the upper hull will require me to paint this part first before gluing.

Similarly, the bogies are half-glued and the wheels and outer cover left off, still on sprue. Bitter experience from the Firefly taught me to keep those on sprue, spray them, then assemble… for my sanity.

M10c Conversion, In Progress I

So, I’m including a M10c in my BAM Brit army, after shifting out the Sherman Firefly into its own dedicated armour platoon (with 3 Cromwells, hopefully). Unfortunately, Tamiya only makes M10, the US Wolverine, not the M10c, the British conversion with the 17 pdr gun.

7Yeah. That big gun. 🙂 (Hmm odd.. There’s no bolt heads on the side armour…)

BAM: At Last, Some Progress.

Well, to be perfectly frank, this month has been kind of shitty. Way too much work, way too much school, way too much sick, way too little sleep, way too little time to work on stuff I want to.

OTOH, I did get some long-overdue chores settled, and results are coming in from both school and work, so while I’m unhappy about not able to work on things I find fun, at least there is progress…

Anyway, part of what I’m doing with my BAM is to update my 1000 pt lists into 2 1000 pt lists… yeah, escalation for the win. :/

So I ended up with more infantry, more support weapons, and have to do up an M10c in place of the Firefly — the Firefly is going to the second list with 3 Cromwells (!). But that means I have to find a way to transport all those infantry, and part of what I did today is to refit the old carrying box… and I managed to squeeze in slots for 4 more infantry:

Getting that fourth LoTR tray to fit above the existing is a bit of a hassle, but I think worthwhile. Now each of my section is on a try by itself, and the specialist and command elements are on a separate tray. Easier to track. Unfortunately I won’t be able to fit all the support weapon (a MMG and a Medium Mortar) into this box, but hey, I’m already pushing it. Probably can put the loaders and spotters, but can’t fit the 40mm bases in… at least, not BOTH of them.

Anyway, I needed to add 3 infantrymen, so I just put them together from some spares. Now that I have a theme for each of my sections, I can further enforce the theme. Veteran Section is attacking, so they get another grenade lobber. One Infantry Section is providing fire, so they get another rifleman. Then the last section is casually strolling around, so they get “Uncle Bob” drinking out of his canteen:

I quite like the minis, but “Uncle Bob” has a particularly nice theme to it. When that section is put together, it really look like they’re just strolling around the countryside in an exercise. 🙂 Hopefully next week I can get them painted up.

BAM: And It’s a Wrap, Folks! (Yeah, right.)

So, that Brit army I keep wailing on? Yeah it’s pretty done. The last step was basing, and for some stupid reasons I kept forgetting where my flock is. Ended up digging quite hard for the stuff and found a tub of Army Builder Grass Green. Like these as they aren’t your usual flock, more like thick sawdust which has a look that appeals to me. Anyways…

BAM: Sherman Firefly

So yeah, I’ve been working on the Sherman Firefly. More or less finished, just need to do a bit of weathering.

The Firefly paints up quite nicely, not having too many details on the outer hull that requires attention. Quite like the last pic.. 17 pdr does have a nice stretch to it. There is a bit of weathering on the Firefly, but as it turns out Vallejo Panzer Aces Dark Mud and Vallejo Russian Uniform are so close that you have to squint in order to see the differences. I’d have to go over it with not so Dark Mud later.

Other than that, there’s a bit of Sepia wash done to bring out the finer details, so not much weathering. No, I’m not going to do the half-barrel camo that 17 pdrs often are depicted in… That’s overdone already.

Not saying that it was all smooth going.. Even with only 3 bogies a side, that still adds up to twelve road wheels to do. It’s just kind of monotonous to work through those.

The track gave me some issues. The long sections were fine, although the top section needed a ruler to keep it down on the return rollers while the plastic cement did its work. The curvature around the drive sprocket and the idler wheel comprises of individual links though, and that was annoying to work with. The drive sprocket in particular.. The links could pivot down and the. You suddenly end up without a proper contact point for the next link. I ended up ramming a metal rod — actually a reamer — in to keep the link up while the cement cured.

Overall I liked the assembly of the Sherman Firefly and the painting wasn’t too bad either. It was just a few items that made it a bit more annoying. I won’t want to put together another Sherman in the near future, but they are rather fun kits to work with.

BAM: Yet Another Batch of Recruits

Well there are times when I feel like I’m a trainer at one of our Army recruits training centers. Every so often, a new batch of freshly assembled minis would pass through..

So on Monday, a new batch of BAM Brits came through the door, and I started by getting them into uniform and basic flesh tones:

I actually managed to get ahead of myself by putting down a layer of black for the webbings. Normally those go on the second day.

BAM: Platoon Ready!

So I managed to get enough Brits painted up at the start of the week to form a minimum sized BAM force:

And took some more photos today with some terrain I have lying around.

My Lieutenant and one squad moving up.

Quite like the above shot as I managed to frame it almost totally just using the iPad.

The second squad firing from cover. Made me realise that this terrain actually doesn’t quite support a squad with hard cover fully.. which is good, from a terrain perspective.

Another view of the firing squad.

Going to have to work on another squad, then some specialists, before I can move on to the two vehicles I have in this force. But, a milestone. 🙂

BAM: In the Trench

20130816-015212.jpg
So, I had a slight fall this evening and as a result did an inspection on the minis I was carrying. Turns out a few base chips (I was using wood filler, so no surprise), one broken Bren barrel (which broke previously already), so it wasn’t too bad. But since the minis are out… 🙂
