Kickstarter Roundup: Week of 21 Oct 2013

Yeah well, this month has been kind of shitty as far as hobby is concerned. Anyways, Kickstarters.

Surprisingly, all the ones I have this week are long-duration Kickstarters. I guess things just fell into a valley for once. So, shortest:

I don’t really need terrain anymore; the local situation’s changed and my terrain’s mostly packed away, and making them is on the back burner nowadays. But this kickstarter has an interesting quality about it. For one, it doesn’t look like a “build-for-wargames” terrain, you know the type with features that conveniently provides cover for any minis.. (sort of like those low slung cover objects in Mass Effect 2; you see one, you know there’s going to be combat soon.)

It does look like people actually designed these pieces to look good so that they won’t get too bored living in them. 🙂 And I like that.

Next, another terrain KS. This one, I don’t quite like. It’s a little too rigid, too squared off — very artificial. If there’s one thing about human nature, it’s that it abhor strict order to a certain degree. Someone’s bound to round off a corner somewhere just to be a bit different. So some of these IMO would need a bit of work to make them look “human”.

I do like the pool house though. It’s exactly the type of weird, non-mathematical structure that an “average” architect would build. It doesn’t look too orderly, so it’ll fit in nicely. And a generic pool house like this can fit multiple genre.

The next one is actually a game.. I’m not sure why I’m backing it though, probably because you don’t see that many Oriental-based games. And that sculpting looks good — one look at the above and you know what you’re looking at. That big bull chieftan looks great, especially.. thinking of using one as a Minotaur in a GW WFB Beastmen army.

The next Kickstarter is more for fans of an existing game. With some monkeying around to avoid getting hit by a publisher, I suppose.. Tide of Iron is an FFG game IIRC, big box and lots of components. I didn’t pick it up when it first release because I was into FoW at that time (and still is), so I didn’t exactly need a semi-tabletop game with mini tanks running all over the place. Still, I hear it’s a decent game, and there appears to be enough interest to put up some cash for this effort. Check it out if you’re a fan of the original game.

One reason I keep an eye out on Kickstarters is that hey, you see new stuff all the time. Then again, a lot of things do get rehashed.. like, hey, it’s yet another bug hunt. Not that it’s a bad thing, it depends on the way the details are handled.

And this little detail is handled quite nicely, I must say. 🙂

Can’t say I’m much into the Bugs (more accurately, the Glorions… huh.). Their bio-artillery reminds me a bit too much of the AT-43 aliens. Personally, I’m not too into the game, but might just pick up a tank or two just because the design is sweet. 🙂

That’s it for this week. Let’s see what pops up next week!
